Debating Recount: BSPS vs. CPS

Written by Zana (Class Banks)

On Thursday the fifth of May 2016, it was the first debate of the year. Belmore South public school was the affirmative team and Campsie public school was the negative team. The topic for debate was ‘competition is a bad thing’. The first speaker was Jacinda. The second speaker was Darrell. The third speaker was Najib. Our last speaker was Kenda. Rahel was the timer person. Ilham was the bell person and Aseel was the chair person… the winner was Campsie Public School. We would like to thank Campsie Public School for coming, and Mrs Kassem for setting it up and for bringing food for the morning tea.

Harmony Day is almost here! By Class Banks

Harmony Day is on 21 March, 2016 and it is a day to celebrate Australia’s diversity. BSPS will be combining Harmony Day with Crazy Hat and Hair Day next Thursday (24 March).

Class Banks are preparing for Harmony Day by joining in activities that explore the ideas of belonging and inclusivity.

You can learn more about Harmony Day here.

Thank you to Ms F who worked with Banks students in creating a diversity display (see below).

Kindergarten News – Literacy and Numeracy

Kindergarten teachers and students are currently involved with the state-wide Best Start Initiative. This initiative aims to support students and their learning in their first year of school.

This week, Kindergarten teachers have been undertaking assessments to observe and understand the literacy and numeracy skills of their students, in a one-to-one setting. These assessments will inform teachers about what their students already know, in order to develop effective learning programs that build upon existing student knowledge.

More information can be found at the following links:

Teacher/parent interviews for Kindergarten families will occur this term, which will include feedback about your student’s Best Start results. A note will be distribute to arrange a meeting when this time is near.

Book Craft

Our new kindergarten students have had a wonderful start to the year!

One of our favourite activities is reading. We enjoy reading Mr McGee books by Pamela Allen, because Mr McGee is funny and strange things happen to him.

Did you know that Mr McGee lives in an apple tree? We used crayons to colour in the background, then made a crepe paper collage for the leaves. At the end, we added round stickers because they looked like apples.

You can look at our work below! It is also on display in the Kindergarten corridor.

Morning and Afternoon Routines for Kindergarten

Belmore South Public School staff warmly welcome our new Kindergarten students.

We have had two very exciting, fun and busy days at school.

As of next week, starting on Monday February 2, Kindergarten students will line up with the rest of the school during arrival and departure times. Please refer to the organisational points below, which may assist this process:

  • At 9:00am, students will line up with their teacher in area 2 (near the canteen/new hall/office building).
  • At 3:00pm, Kindergarten students will be walked outside, by their teacher, to the green wall in area 4 (near the entrance to the infants’ building).

You can view the school map here.

We look forward to a wonderful year of learning!

S1 Jasper enjoy gymnastics

Today, S1 Jasper tried to capture the fun that we have at gymnastics. We have made a video that you can see below.

Here are some of the skills and movements that we have been learning about:

  • tuck sit
  • L sit

  • bars
  • trampoline

S1 Jasper Artworks

Something colourful has brightened up the office hallway!

S1 Jasper’s artworks are on display this term.

We created artworks as part of our mathematics learning about two-dimensional shapes. We drew 2D shapes, overlapped them and then coloured the shapes in different colours. We used different tools – wax crayons, oil pastels and paint washes.
