New BSPS Website Launched!

You might have noticed our school blog has had a makeover to get a new look. All the content you know and love have been moved into our new website. You’ll also find some new photographs of our school community and facilities, calendar, newsletters, policies and news updates directly from the DEC, and more. But we will continue to use our established blog to share student learning and celebrations, and our Facebook page for school updates. The link to our new website is at the top of the page, or go directly to www.belmoresth-p.schools.nsw.edu.au.

Kindergarten News – Literacy and Numeracy

Kindergarten teachers and students are currently involved with the state-wide Best Start Initiative. This initiative aims to support students and their learning in their first year of school.

This week, Kindergarten teachers have been undertaking assessments to observe and understand the literacy and numeracy skills of their students, in a one-to-one setting. These assessments will inform teachers about what their students already know, in order to develop effective learning programs that build upon existing student knowledge.

More information can be found at the following links:

Teacher/parent interviews for Kindergarten families will occur this term, which will include feedback about your student’s Best Start results. A note will be distribute to arrange a meeting when this time is near.

Morning and Afternoon Routines for Kindergarten

Belmore South Public School staff warmly welcome our new Kindergarten students.

We have had two very exciting, fun and busy days at school.

As of next week, starting on Monday February 2, Kindergarten students will line up with the rest of the school during arrival and departure times. Please refer to the organisational points below, which may assist this process:

  • At 9:00am, students will line up with their teacher in area 2 (near the canteen/new hall/office building).
  • At 3:00pm, Kindergarten students will be walked outside, by their teacher, to the green wall in area 4 (near the entrance to the infants’ building).

You can view the school map here.

We look forward to a wonderful year of learning!

Please congratulate Lurlene and wish her well as Relieving Principal of Belmore South Public School in 2015.

Hot Weather

With temperatures predicted to reach the high 30s and low 40s in the next few days and weeks, it’s a perfect time to think about sun safety.

At Belmore South, we treat the heat very seriously. Some measures we take to protect our community:

  • Water bottles welcomed in to the classrooms, students encouraged to drink often and refill when needed.
  • Playground areas changed to make sure play is in the shade. In extreme weather, playtime may be inside.
  • Active lessons such as sport moved to cooler times in the day, or postponed until more appropriate weather.
  • Varying normal teaching programs through use of cool learning spaces.
  • Students and staff encouraged to weat hats and other sun protection whenever outside: “no hat, sit in the shade”.
  • Lights off, windows open, blinds down, and using fans and other cooling options appropriately.

Keep Cool

Canteen

Belmore South Public School run a healthy food canteen on Wednesdays and Fridays. We rely on parent volunteers to run our canteen, so please get in touch with the school if you would like to help.

Lunch orders should be written on a paper bag at home with the child’s name, class (or teacher), and food chosen from the menu. Money should go inside the paper bag – correct change if possible! Orders should be given to the classroom teacher in the morning, so they can send it to the canteen in the class lunch basket, and they will be collected at eating time.

WELCOME to the 2014 new school year!

We welcome a number of new staff, families and students to our school. The year has started very smoothly and students seem to have returned refreshed, focused and ready to achieve their best. We look forward to working together to provide the best educational experience that we can for your children, creating their personal ‘path to the future’.

We are yet to confirm our student numbers exactly, so that our staffing can be established correctly. Our 2014 classes will have to wait a little longer, as it is imperative that we place our students in their learning spaces carefully. Apologies to those who are waiting with anticipation!

Term 1 consists of 11 school weeks. This year the Easter and ANZAC day public holidays fall inside our Term 1 holiday break. A Term calendar will be sent home shortly. As always, our website holds loads of information for you to access, including newsletters and notes.

Woolworth Earn and Learn

We have again registered for the Earn and Learn promotion conducted by Woolworths.

It is simple – when you shop at Woolworths you will receive a sticker for every $10 that is spent (excluding tobacco, liquor and gift cards). The sticker can then be placed onto your child’s sticker card that has been sent home earlier this week. When the card is completely full, return the card to the collection box that will be located in the office foyer.

All stickers collected will help us to get a range of teaching and learning resources including paints, books, class games andmany more.

Everyone is able to help support our school by shopping at Woolworths between 9th May and 1st July.
