KGumnut Artworks

KGumnut have been preparing two artworks for the BSPS Art Show!

  • Artwork 1 – ‘gumnut babies’ based on our class name and the famous Australian book characters Snugglepot and Cuddlepie
  • Artwork 2 – candle holders, based on our learning of Diwali (festival of lights) and other multicultural celebrations

It was a very exciting process – please have a look below!

Book Craft

Our new kindergarten students have had a wonderful start to the year!

One of our favourite activities is reading. We enjoy reading Mr McGee books by Pamela Allen, because Mr McGee is funny and strange things happen to him.

Did you know that Mr McGee lives in an apple tree? We used crayons to colour in the background, then made a crepe paper collage for the leaves. At the end, we added round stickers because they looked like apples.

You can look at our work below! It is also on display in the Kindergarten corridor.

S2 Mississippi

This term S2 Mississippi have been learning about recycling materials in science and technology. Our H.I.S.E. unit this term focused on famous landmarks in Australia. Our aim for our artwork was to create an Australian landmark using recycled materials. We collected materials such as wood, paper, cardboard, plastic and wool. We combined these with various other construction materials such as plasticine, paint, glue and masking tape.

Once we each decided which landmark we were going to create, we had to design our landmark. This involved sketching our landmark and labelling it with the materials needed to make each part. The next step was to paint our boxes and all the parts we were going to use to create our diorama. Then, we assembled our pieces to create our landmark. Out of our recycled materials we have created the Harbour Bridge, Uluru, Centre point tower, Great Barrier Reef, Opera House and the Three Sisters.

Stage 2 Dioramas

Stage 2 La Plata have been busy designing and creating dioramas of Australian Landmarks.

We created dioramas using recyclable materials as part of our Science work on ‘Product’ and our History work with ‘Australian Landmarks’.

We built Australian landmarks based on our work in History this term: Uluru, The Sydney Harbour Bridge, The Sydney Opera House and The Three Sisters.

Comet’s Art for the Expo

In the Comet class, we’ve been working hard on our products unit of work. We’ve learnt so much about Indigenous products this term and we’ve been lucky enough to have some artefacts loaned to Belmore South from the Henry Parkes Equity Resource Centre. One of the artefacts was an Indigenous message stone. Message stones (and sticks) were used throughout Australia and were a unique way of communicating. Each stick or stone was carved or painted in such a way that would help the carrier remember the message. The invention of message stones and sticks meant that long messages could be communicated between many people.

Comet were fascinated by these tools and decided to make our own message stones for the Belmore South Art Expo. We came up with some symbols that meant a lot to us as a class. Then we drew our own designs onto paper. After that we chose the design that meant the most to us, using traditional colours we painted our rocks and then carefully painted the symbols onto them.

Stage 1 art workshops with local artists!

On Monday, Stage 1 (S1 Comet, S1 Nile and S1 Amazon) were very lucky to have two local artists come to Belmore South Public and hold some art workshops. Students were able to contribute to a major piece of work that will be on display at the Art Expo to be held in week 10 of this term. Cheungha and Hules are both very accomplished artists who have held many exhibitions of their own! Students loved being able to ask questions about how Cheungha and Hules started painting, and what motivates them to paint.

Selafina: “It was fun painting on the big canvas!”

Matiu: “They were so nice to us!”

Raitu: “I liked seeing all the artwork they brought in”

Check out some of the “before” and “after” photos of our collaborative piece.
