Wow, what a week!

August 15, 2008

Belmore South has been a hub of activity this week. On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, the Stage 2 and Stage 3 classes attended science lessons provided by scientisits from the CSIRO. The students were able to investigate the workings of the human body through a variety of simple but engaging experiments.

On Thursday, Stage 1 and 2 students attended a cricket clinic provided by the NSW Blues cricket team.

On Friday, the ACPE students returned to continue their practicum experience with Kindergarten and Stage1 and Stage 2 and 3 continued with their PE program provided by “Hoopsters”. Kindergarten and Stage 1 also participated in the weekly “Dance 2 Be Fit” session earlier on during the week. The K - 6 Art Group also met again this Friday and worked tirelessly, but none the less, creatively, for 5 hours.

Wow, what a week!

Athletics Field Events

August 8, 2008

On the 4th August our school had the field events for the athletics carnival. The events were high jump, discus, shot put, tunnel ball and captain ball. Some students performed very well and everyone tried their hardest. The shotput was very heavy and the discus was heavy as well. The high jump looked easy but when we tried it, it was much harder than it looked. Most people found captain ball and tunnel ball very easy. It was a great day full of sports and every one had fun.

Debaters deliver another victory

June 18, 2008

The Team and the Coach

The Team of Celia, Naomi, Ramiz and Natalie convinced not only the audience but the adjudicators that Canteens should not serve junk food.

They had a strong team line which their opposition, Strathfield South Public School found it difficult to rebut. Each of our team who had to rebut did a great job.

The Chairman, Justin and Timekeeper, Timothy ensured the debate ran smoothly.

The audience of S2/3P and S3H were attentive, informed, polite and enthusiastic in their congratulations to the debaters.

Thanks to the Coach, Mr McGuinness.

Cross Country Triumph and Despair

June 18, 2008

Jayam has won his age group at the regional crosscountry. Jayam was excited and proud of his success. He found the 3km course tough and was not happy with those runners who pushed and jostled down the hills. Jayam was victorious despite falling and hurting his already damaged knee.

Hafiz, our National Champion runner, did not experience the same success. Hafiz had a good lead in his age group when crippled by cramp. With the finish line in sight Hafiz could not continue and had to be taken to the First Aid station by the marshalls.

School Recognised - National Award for Excellence

June 18, 2008

Our Principal, Ms Gail Dyer, was invited to Canberra earlier this month to be awarded with a National Quality Teaching Award for Excellence as a Principal. Here she is sharing her success with our local member the Hon. Tony Burke MHR and Minister for Agriculture.

Ms Dyer was one of 52 educators from across Australia who were recognised for their work in education. She was one of 6 principals who achieved a highly commended and one of only 2 primary principals. Along with the Certificate of Recognition presented to Ms Dyer by the Deputy Prime Minsiter, Julia Gillard, the school has received $15 000 to put towards continuing to improve our students’ learning.

Ms Dyer stressed it is the quality of Belmore South Staff who are responsible for the recognition. She may lead them in their professional learning but as she reminds people who ask they are the ones who take the ideas and incorporate them into their quality classroom teaching practices. They have also embraced and acknowledged the importance of embedding technology into all learning experiences. Every teacher in the school confidently uses Interactive Whiteboards and many are skilful users of Web 2.0 applications.

She also feels she has great support and superb role models for the younger teachers in Mrs Kim Pericles who is a world leader in the use of Web 2.0 applications in her classroom, Ms Judi Leonard who led the development of ICT confidence as an Intel: Teach to the Future Tutor. Mr Greg McGuinness who translated his excellence as a classroom teacher into our magic Mr Computer. Mrs Vanessa Jenkins who is in there always ensuring she is leading the way.

Success is mixed in PSSA Knockouts.

May 29, 2008

Both boys and girls soccer teams played their knockout competitions during the week. Both teams played especially well. The boys won and will play against Engadine next Friday 6 June.

The girls played bravely, scoring 1 goal. Unfortunately their opposition, Enfield Primary School also scored a goal. At the end of extra time the scores were still equal 1 goal each and 2 corners. The rules say in this situation the first team to be awarded a corner is declared the winner. Enfield were the first to be awarded a corner so they go through to the next round.

The netballers are playing Brighton le Sands at Rockdale on Friday 30 May. The girls softball team will be playing Epping West on Friday 6 June. Our basketballers will be playing last year’s State Champions Bangor on Monday 2 June.

There is so much happening!! with still more to come.

With all the great training from their coaches the teams will be certain to do well and have already been great representatives of our school. Thanks to Miss Knoke- softball, Miss Worthing-soccer, Miss Rhodes - netball, Miss Krisenthal- cricket and basketball.

Watch this space for results.

Cross country reps do school proud.

May 29, 2008

16 students, 4 from each age group represented our school at the Zone Cross Country today. The team did really well with many finishing in the leading groups. Special congratulations to Jayam, Hafiz and Michael who will be representing the Zone at the Regional Cross Country. Both Jayam and Hafiz were placed first in their age groups

The team travelled by train to Canterbury South Primary School. They were accompanied by Mrs Harrison and Miss Krisenthal who both reported that all students were extremely well behaved.

Doing Science is such fun.

May 29, 2008

All classes from Kindergarten to Year 6 have completed their third rotation of CSIRO’s Labs on Legs Program. All of the teachers have enjoyed the experience as much as the students. These activities are one aspect of the Do IT component of our general teaching learning program which is designed to enrich our students’ world.

In the photos students are building simple machines, others are exploring the phenomena of weather and others are exploring simple chemistry concepts.

The Debates begin . . .

May 29, 2008

The first debate of the season has been won by our brilliant debaters: Ramiz, Natalie, Celia and Naomi. The opposition was Campsie Public School and our team had to argue against the premise “Earth hour is a waste of time”

Mr McGuinness coaches the team.

They were  well prepared and very convincing with their arguments.

Taking up the Premiers Sporting Challenge

May 28, 2008

This term the students have begun to keep log books of all the sporting and physical activities they undertake in a day. The school is very lucky that Mrs Auciello has devised a really strong physical activity program. Each class adds up all the minutes each student spends being physical in a week. This can include out of school activity such as sports training, dancing, martial arts, bike riding walking etc..

All of this activity is recorded on a class chart and then entered onto the Premiers’ Sporting Challenge Website. The very best result a group can achieve is the Diamond level. (Click on images to enlarge)
