School Rules / Behaviour Management Plan
Our school is a safe and happy place to be. All children have the right to learn and nochild has the right to stop others from learning. We encourage children to develop selfdiscipline by taking responsibility for their actions. Children are encouraged to show respect for others’ feelings, religion and cultural backgrounds.
Our School Rules reflect the Values expected by the Australian and NSW Governments. They reflect the emphasis we place on caring for each other, being courteous and respectful.
The following rules outline the high standards to behaviour expected in the classroom, in the playground, when on outings and when travelling to and from school.
School Rules
- Be safe
- Do your best
- Respect others
- Talk and listen politely
- Care for our environment
Parents of children who persistently disobey school rules will be notified. Assistance of the school counsellor may be sought in helping the child overcome problems. However, children and parents should be aware that the school will not hesitate to enforce the suspension policy should the situation warrant such measures.
Student Role
Peer Mediation is to be used for niggling easy to solve playground problems among students.
Staff Role
For unacceptable student behaviour that cannot be solved by peer mediation staff will follow these steps:
1. Remind the student of the school rules and then ask them what they should be doing?
2. Turn around and walk away thus giving the appearance that you EXPECT the appropriate behaviour.
3. If behaviour persists remove the student from the immediate environment to a time out space;
- On playground have student sit on wall to cool down and think use this for no more than 15 minutes.
- Severe playground incidents should be notified to the executive, sent to the executive, counselled, resolution if possible and recorded in the Playground book.
- Persistent misbehaviour will be notified to parents..
- Within classroom designate a time out space / chair etc. to allow them to cool down (to put a student outside the classroom is a breach of duty of care).
- To give teacher space after repeated incidents in the classroom then a student may be sent to a buddy teacher, please organise this with each other and make sure wherever possible the buddy is not an executive. Ensure the student has work to go on with.
4. If a dangerous situation develops either in the classroom or on the playground a runner should be sent to the Administration Building immediately.
5. If a student consistently presents as a problem for more than one staff member then the executive need to be notified and further intervention will occur as per persistent misbehaviour.
6. Under no circumstances will violence be tolerated, irrespective of the above guidleines if a student is violent towards another student or a teacher the parents willbe called and the student suspended.
Examples of acceptable behaviours are included on the behaviour grid below.
