Nutbush K to 2

Every week the K to 2 students get to dance or do Zumba classes here they are giving the Nutbush a try.

Kindergarten kids have fun with numbers

We have been enjoying learning about numbers in kindergarten this year. We learn to count and recognise numbers by playing lots of different types of number games. Bingo and the Tower game are two games we have learnt to play with Ms Hionis. The Tower game requires us to roll the dice and collect the number of cubes shown on the dice. Once we’ve done this we can begin building our tower. Each person gets a turn. After several turns the person with the highest tower is the winner. When we play this game, we learn to recognise dot patterns, we practice counting and we compare the lengths of the towers we made. Playing Bingo is fun too!

In this game we need to recognise numbers on the number cards. The person with all the correct numbers on their card is the winner. When we finish playing our number games we write about what we did in our books.

Welcome to S1Baker!

Here are some special things you need to know about S1Baker:

We have a class mascot!

His name is the Muffin Man. He goes home with us when we have been a good friend, produced quality work, or learnt something new that day. We get to take home his journal and write a story or draw a picture that night. The next day, we tell the whole class what fun things we did with the Muffin Man.

Another important thing to know about our class is that we will have two new people… or should we say animals in our class after the holidays.

They will look something like this…

guinea pig 1guinea pig 2

Miss Hackney is going to teach us how to look after them, and different people are going to clean out their cage and feed them everyday!

We are very excited!!!!

S1Irwin Fractions

Fractions

In weeks 4 & 5 the children in S1Irwin have been learning about fractions.

We learnt that a fraction is part of a whole.

We divided a piece of brenex paper into half then we folded it again and we made quarters.

A half is one part of two pieces and a quarter is one part of four pieces.

We learnt that fractions are equal parts of a whole that you can share out equally.

In the following lesson we created a fraction problem.

Our problem was that we only had one apple to share amongst eight children. We decided we needed to cut the apple into equal bits in order for all the children to get their fair share.

We cut the apple into half which gave us 2 pieces. That wasn’t enough, so we cut the two bits of apple in half again which created four pieces (1/4’s). But again that wasn’t enough.  Finally we cut the existing pieces in half again, which gave us eight equal pieces(1/8’s) to share amongst eight hungry children. We enjoyed learning about fractions.

a whole apple

The apple has been cut in half.

The apple has been cut into quarters.

Now the apple has been cut into eighths.

Eight pieces of apple for eight children.

Friday Performance Assembly

This week Stage I Bird ran the school assembly and entertained us with Music and Poetry.

During the week a couple of their students chose the best learning environment in the school. They chose Kindergarten Fox.

Some students from 1 Bird had to choose an Assembly Class of the Week.  They chose S2 Preston from the Primary and 1 Base were the best from K to 2.

Great work you did everything so well.

S1 Irwin Explores Area in Mathematics

S1 Irwin have been exploring Area in Mathematics.

We have learnt that AREA is the size of a surface. We have had lots of fun using informal units to estimate, measure and compare different areas. We discovered that we need to cover the entire surface without leaving any gaps and that tessellating shapes are best for measuring area. We also used tangrams and discovered that the area remains the same when the pieces are rearranged.

We used our imagination to create some great pictures!
