Book Week Book Parade

One Friday in August, Belmore South dressed up in their favourite fictional characters for the book parade. Students read books from the Premier’s Reading Challenge list and made craft in their gemstone teams.

Here are some photos from the book parade.

Reading at home

Please read with your child every night it helps them improve fluency, accuracy and understanding.

In our school we have two sets of routines for making reading at home possible.

In K to 2 the students select a book at their level from the class home reading box to read to their parents every night. These books go home in their Home Reading bag.

Our K to 2 students are also able to borrow books from the library. This experience is designed to expose them to different types of texts, books and encourage them to become responsible users of the Library.

Taking reading books home in Years 3 to 6 has a different emphasis and purpose.
We aim to develop in the students

  • responsibility for borrowing books, handling them with respect and keeping them safe
  • the ability to choose a book that is appropriate to their reading level and interest.

The students should be bringing a library bag (like the one in the photo) to school and borrowing from the Library.

They should be borrowing one book that they are able to read to their parents every night. If they finish the book they should go to the Library at lunchtime and exchange their book for another. They are also able to take out books in interest areas to look at without having to read them to parents.

The class teacher has advertised the Library days to their students.

The Library has a recommended number of books to be borrowed for each stage level:

Kindergarten:   borrowing begins in Term 2 and it will be 1 book
Stage 1:                                  1 book
Stage 2:                                  2 books
Stage 3:                                  2 books

Please talk to Mr Vitale for any reading advice, he is the school librarian.
