Scientists for a day!

Science Fair

To celebrate National Science Week 2012, Belmore South Public School held a Science Fair to fundraise for science resources in our school.

Students participated in five hands on workshops in their gemstone learning teams in which they got solve a crime using forensic evidence, make a telephone, fish with magnets, create slime, make a foaming dinosaur, and make some musical panpipes.

At lunchtime, students were able to buy slime, grow their own beans, and gobble up lollybags while enjoying a sausage sizzle and throwing a soapy sponge at Miss Hackney’s face.

After lunch, students were visited by a Mad Madam Mim the scientist who presented her “Air, Water and Fire show.” We have never seen anything like it!

We are proud to say we raised just under $1000, and watch this space to find out what cool and wacky science resources we buy for our school!

S1Matisse explore under the sea!

This term S1Matisse have been learning all about underwater environments. For our assembly item, a puppet musical, we decided to share the amazing discoveries we had made about all the wonderful creatures that live in our beautiful coral reefs. We spent the first 5 weeks, in our art lessons, designing and making our puppets. We made puffer fish, dolphins, sharks, lobsters, octopuses and sea horses. We used only recycled materials found around our school and from our homes. Check out our artistic processs and the final results below.

S1Picasso Brush For A Bright Smile

S1Picasso have been learning about cleaning our teeth the right way.

First you brush along the gum line.
Then you brush inside the surface of your back teeth.
Thirdly, you need to brush chewing surfaces at the back of the mouth.
Then use the tip of the brush to clean behind all front and top teeth.
Lastly don’t forget your tongue!!!

Please brush twice a day…

Dr Hackney finds plaque in Stage 1!!!!!!

Miss Dongas delivered a very special package to our class last week…. a dental hygiene kit from colgate!

We thought it was poison, so Dr Hackney tried it first. She said she brushed her teeth but we’re not so sure… when she chewed her ‘disclotab’, all her teeth turned bright pink!

Dr Hackney had some serious brushing to do to get all the pink off! She taught us how to brush our teeth properly so we could get all the food and germs that cause plaque off our teeth. Her mouth was all pink and foamy!!!

Take a look at how much fun we had learning to brush our teeth… (if only it was this fun when Mum asks me!)

S1Picasso learnt about toy science

CSIRO came to visit our school last week. We learnt that toys are full of science as well as lots of fun!!!

Patterns and Light explored by Stage 2

The CSIRO Workshop for Stage Two was looking at light and patterns. Here are our students exploring these concepts through a variety of activities.

A puzzling question: Is white light really white? The answer is found in these pictures.

Stage 1 Excursion to the Australian Museum

Last Friday Satge 1 went on a school excursion to the Australian Museum.  We caught the bus to the city and spotted lots of trucks and aeroplanes along the way.  When we arrived we ate our recess in Hyde park and then went in to explore all the wonderful exhibits the Museum has to offer.

We saw Dinosaurs, Skeletons and lots of interesting Australian animals!

During the day each class attend a workshop in the Aboriginal Hands-on Room.  Here students learnt all about Aboriginal people prior to European contact.  Not only were we able to learn all the uses of different tools, musical instruments and the significance of Indigenous Art, we were also able to play the Didgeridoo, grind seed into flour, weave string to make dilly bags, handle boomerangs, try on kangaroo skins to keep us warm and crete our very own cave painting!  Wow!

We would  like to thank parent club for their support in getting us to and from the museum.  This was a very valuable educational experience and we had a fantastic time discovering all the museum had to offer!

K-Henri Learn Seasons

K-Henri are learning about the seasons and weather. This week we read ‘Here Comes Spring’ which showed what trees look like in the different seasons. Mrs Klose helped us draw pictures like this one:

seasons

Changes in trees in different seasons.

Frederik says “Winter is very very very cold”. “Mahmoud says snow is very very cold and it snows in Turkey”.
Josephine says Spring “is when flowers grow”. Alice says “the flowers are in the trees”.  Seren says “we can pick some flowers in Spring”.
Jessica says “Summer is very very sunny”. Abu says “it is really very hot”.  Alissa says “the sun is very very hot”.
Cailen says “Autumn is when leaves fall off” Cyrus says “the leaves fall down off the tree”. Alice says “the leaves are orange and brown”. Matius says Autumn is very very windy”.
Anisa says “it is windy today”. Christopher says “the weather is cold”. Hennessey says ” I want snow!” Sarah says “I want snow too”.
