Number Groups With Ms Hionis

Kindergarten has enjoyed learning about dot patterns and numbers with Ms Hionis during Number groups this term.

We learnt to play the dice board game.

The aim of the game is to choose six figures to represent each side of a dice on the game board.

You roll the dice. If for example you get six dots you move the figure representing six, one space along.

The person playing the game keeps rolling the dice until one of the figures has crossed the finish line. The children used mini transport figures and mini sea animals to represent each dot pattern.

This was a game the children played against themselves. This was a fun game to help the children learn the dot patterns without having to count each dot every time they rolled the dice.

Dancing starts early at our school

Dance is an important part of our school culture with the infants learning to move and string together steps every week. Dance happens in K to 2 when the primary are rehearsing for Wakakirri.

It is important for all children to be given the opportunity to take part in music, dance and movement activities. It builds their sense of rhythm, helps with pattern recognition and sequencing and also improves memorisation skills. Confidence as a dancer is a great social skill.

Here  are K to 2 grappling with the challenge of the Nutbush.

Patterns and Light explored by Stage 2

The CSIRO Workshop for Stage Two was looking at light and patterns. Here are our students exploring these concepts through a variety of activities.

A puzzling question: Is white light really white? The answer is found in these pictures.

Kindergarten kids have fun with numbers

We have been enjoying learning about numbers in kindergarten this year. We learn to count and recognise numbers by playing lots of different types of number games. Bingo and the Tower game are two games we have learnt to play with Ms Hionis. The Tower game requires us to roll the dice and collect the number of cubes shown on the dice. Once we’ve done this we can begin building our tower. Each person gets a turn. After several turns the person with the highest tower is the winner. When we play this game, we learn to recognise dot patterns, we practice counting and we compare the lengths of the towers we made. Playing Bingo is fun too!

In this game we need to recognise numbers on the number cards. The person with all the correct numbers on their card is the winner. When we finish playing our number games we write about what we did in our books.
